Thirteen people have been declared dead following a mine collapse at Maiagwagwa in Bassa Local Government Area (LGA) of Plateau State.
The LGA Chairman, Dr Joshua Rittie, confirmed this to reporters in Josh on Monday, November 11, 2024.
Ritie, who expressed sadness at the death toll, said the incident happened last Saturday.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reported that the collapsed mine is located at the border of Bassa, Jos South and Jos North LGAs.
Ritie said seven of the dead were from Bassa LGA.
“This is an unfortunate incident. These young people were just trying to make a living,” he said.
“They put their energy into addressing the country’s current economic difficulties but they died prematurely.
“I would like to express my deepest condolences to the families and loved ones affected by this tragedy.”
It was concluded that most of the dead were teenagers between the ages of 18 and 30. Six of the victims are from K’iche’ land in the Rukuba chiefdom.
