On Thursday afternoon, Mustapha Gubio, the ruling APC party’s candidate for governor of Borno State, was attacked by suspected Boko Haram fighters. Around 2:30 p.m., Gubio and his entourage were travelling down a highway in the northern part of the state to express gratitude to party members who had chosen him as their preferred candidate when the attack occurred.
The caravan was shot at close to the Kareto village.
A witness who was present said it was horrifying.
The attackers attacked their cars with rockets and gunfire.
However, security personnel, including police, military, and other agencies, put up a fierce fight and drove the attackers away.
The attack was verified by a police spokesperson.
He claimed that after exchanging gunfire with the alleged terrorists and forcing them to flee into the woods, tactical cops searched the area for any more bombs that might have been left behind.
Everyone in Gubio’s convoy escaped unharmed, despite the fact that some police cars were damaged during the altercation.
Nobody was injured.
Following the event, government officials and the governor candidate were evacuated to a secure location.
