Prince Isaac Fayose, a well-known social commentator, expressed disappointment over a widely shared video that purportedly showed certain Nigerian Army commanders overseeing the distribution of bread as part of a political campaign. The Nigerian military was widely criticised by the public a few days ago after the video went viral, according to newspaper sources.
During free bread distribution operations in a Yoruba-speaking neighbourhood, some soldiers were purportedly seen controlling crowds in the video.
In the widely shared video, residents were shown waiting in queue to receive one loaf of bread each while speaking Yoruba.
Social media users have reacted to the situation by accusing the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) of utilising poverty as a means of gaining political support.
In response, Fayose claimed that President Bola Tinubu’s administration was “weaponising poverty for the purpose of electoral gain” on a Facebook page on Friday.
“Imagine the Nigerian Army overseeing the distribution of bread to people that the same Tinubu government impoverished,” he said.
How did we get to the point where we are using poverty as a weapon to win elections? Imagine our dear nation. Nigeria is suffering greatly under the APC administration, particularly under Tinubu’s rule.
“How could Yorubas continue to support tribalism while tolerating this degree of slavery to this day?”
