The Department of State Services (DSS) has allowed controversial Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) leader, Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, to meet with his legal representatives for the first time in almost two months.

The development, announced by Kanu’s senior counsel, Barrister Aloy Ejimakor, came on Monday following the directive of the Director General of DSS, Mr Adeola Oluwatosin Ajayi.

Ejimakor revealed that Kanu’s legal team, who have been barred from meeting him since September 27, 2024, have finally been able to meet him.

He noted that the team also includes US-based lawyer Ndidi Awurum and that the breakthrough was due to the intervention of legal expert Obi Aguocha.

“Today, at the direction of the Director General of Information (DG DSS), the #MnkLegalTeam successfully conducted its first visit to Mazi Ndidi Kanu since September 27th.

We were joined by Mazi Ndidi Awurum from the US. Our rigorous legal efforts and the intervention of Obi Aguocha were crucial to this outcome,” Ejimakor said in a post on X (formerly Twitter).

Ejimakor had previously expressed concern over the DSS’s blatant disregard for court orders regarding Kanu’s access to legal counsel. It would be recalled that Ejimakor had accused the DSS of willfully violating a court order that allowed Kanu access to his lawyers.

He subsequently promised to vigorously pursue all previously suspended legal actions to enforce compliance as the DSS continues to defy the court order.
