According to the UK Mirror, Iran withdrew from the 2026 World Cup after U.S.-Israeli attacks on its territory, prompting FIFA to look into potential alternatives.
The United States will host the majority of the 2026 World Cup, but the football world has been impacted by President Donald Trump’s political choices. Missile strikes killed Iran’s Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, and destroyed portions of Tehran, the country’s capital.
FIFA now needs to find another nation to complete the group, which already consists of Egypt, Belgium, and New Zealand, as Iran is expected to withdraw. Iran won their Asian qualification group, but FIFA may decide to expedite the UAE’s entry into the competition because they placed second.
But in the match to decide who would go to the intercontinental play-off, the UAE lost to Iraq. Iraq will now compete for a World Cup place against the victor of Bolivia vs. Suriname.
This has increased the complexity of the situation. There are rumours that FIFA will give Iraq a straight spot in place of Iran, requiring the UAE to compete in the play-offs.
