With a number of clearance operations dubbed “Operation Golden Peace,” the Nigerian Army, acting under 6 Brigade/Sector 3 of Operation Whirl Stroke, has intensified its battle against banditry in Taraba State.
Many bandit hideouts in the state’s northern region have been successfully demolished by the operations, which are based on thorough patrols and community engagements.
Targeting infamous terrorist and bandit camps near Takum Local Government Area’s Lijem High Ground, the most recent phase of the operation got underway on November 28, 2024.
The residents felt more confident after the troops cleared out the hiding places and increased their security presence close to Vingiri and Vingir villages. On November 29 and 30, additional operations targeted the villages of Kufai Ahmadu, Jam, Hingir, Ukum, and Nbaume.
Notably, troops engaged bandits in a bloody gunfight in the New Gboko and Che Adekpe camps, which are connected to the wanted criminal Liamdoo Douglas Adekpe, popularly known as Boujogh.
The bandits fled in confusion as they were overpowered by the superior firepower. A handheld Baofeng radio, two motorcycles, an AK-47 magazine, 27 rounds of 7.62mm special ammunition, and other ammunition were recovered by the troops during the operations, which also destroyed a number of camps.
On November 30, the troops increased security by moving into the Donga Local Government Area’s Akume and Ananum neighbourhoods.
The commander of the 6 Brigade, Brigadier General Kingsley Chidiebere Uwa, praised the local communities’ cooperation and called for ongoing attention to detail and prompt reporting of any suspicious activity.
General Uwa gave the public the assurance that “we will work together to ensure peace and security throughout Taraba State and beyond.”
