Militants from the Islamic State in West Africa (ISWAP) launched a deadly attack on Geidam town in Yobe state in the early hours of Saturday, killing one resident and causing widespread destruction, according to multiple sources.

The attack began at about 3:30 a.m., when militants stormed the town, firing explosives indiscriminately and terrorizing residents.

Sources told counter-insurgency expert Zagazola Makama that the attackers destroyed items and set two vehicles belonging to Nigerian Customs Service officers on fire.

The militants are said to have desecrated the grave of Khalifa Ailoma in Kololi area, setting the graveyard on fire.

They also attacked the home of Dahir Muhammadu (60), a night watchman stationed near the Geidam Polytechnic. Muhammadu sustained a gunshot wound to the neck and was rushed to Geydam Specialist Hospital where he was later pronounced dead.
