Professor Lawan said the development was in line with the October deadline given by the Supreme Court to electoral bodies to conduct local government elections.
The Kano State Independent Electoral Commission (KANSIEC) on Friday announced the postponement of local elections in the state’s 44 local government elections.
The local elections were set for October 26, 2024. Chairman Prof. Sani Lawan announced the postponement while addressing reporters at the commission’s headquarters on Friday.
Prof. Lawan said the development was in line with the October deadline given to the electoral body by the Supreme Court to conduct the LG elections.
The state’s local government elections were initially scheduled for November 30, 2024. He said, “Recognizing and complying with the recent Supreme Court ruling, the mutual agreement between the states and the federal government, and the October expiration of local government fiscal autonomy, the commission is rightly compelled to postpone the local government elections already scheduled for November 30, 2024, to October 26, 2024.
However, “the commission calls on all stakeholders to understand the compelling situation and give the commission its due support and cooperation,” Prof. Lawan said.
