Claims that married women must provide their husbands’ passport data pages or identification documents in order to renew their own passports have been refuted by the Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS).

Remember how a Nigerian writer criticised the service on social media? The woman going through a divorce wrote in her post that she started renewing her passport last week but hasn’t finished it because of the numerous requirements for women.

The NIS responded via its X handle, stating that there is no law requiring married women to affix their husbands’ passport pages or provide identification before they can renew their passports. See the response from the NIS below:
