The National Judicial Council (NJC) has launched an investigation into federal and state court judges for inconsistent rulings in political cases in Rivers State.
The investigation will be led by a committee consisting of former Court of Appeal judges and two court presidents under the supervision of the Chief Justice of Nigeria, Justice Kudirat Kekere-Ekun.
The Chief Justice met the committee on Monday and directed them to complete the investigation expeditiously, directing them to submit their investigation report within a week.
The investigation will focus on several judges involved in mediating the ongoing political unrest between Governor Siminarai Hubara and his estranged godfather, Capital Territory Minister Nyesom Wike, resulting in numerous legal disputes. Furthermore, the President of the Federal Court has been summoned by the Chief Justice and is expected to be questioned on these questions on Tuesday.
This action followed several formal complaints to the Council, but Justice Kekere Ekun himself launched a full-scale investigation on his own initiative in response to serious public concerns over legal inconsistencies.
The NJC investigation is aimed at addressing these inconsistent rulings which are not only complicating the political landscape in Rivers State but also raising questions about the integrity and impartiality of the judiciary in handling politically sensitive cases.
