A 36-year-old suspected child trafficker, Mrs. Chinelo Onwasonya, has been arrested by operatives of the Rapid Intervention Team of the Imo State Police Command.
During the arrest, authorities rescued three stolen children; Chinecherem Eze, 3; Delight Eze; and Okeke Favor, 3.
The suspect, described as a notorious child thief and trafficker, was arrested on Wednesday at Amajyeke Park, Owerri, while transporting children abducted from different parts of the state.
Speaking at the Police Headquarters in Owerri on Thursday, the state Commissioner of Police, Aboki Danjuma, hailed the arrest as a major success in the fight against human trafficking.
He said the operation was carefully planned to ensure the safety of children and dismantle the suspects’ network. He announced that children reported missing have been reunited with their families.
“This success brings relief to affected families and demonstrates our resolve to protect children,” Danjuma said.
“We call on members of the public to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activity related to child trafficking and abduction. Their cooperation is essential to prevent future incidents.”
He assured residents that the command is committed to eradicating child trafficking and related crimes in the state, promising continued efforts to ensure a safe environment for children.
