Current Director-General of the World Trade Organization (WTO), Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, has expressed interest in running for a second term.

To this end, Okonjo-Iweala will be the only candidate for the post of WTO Director-General.
The organization formally launched the process to nominate the next Director-General on October 8.
The WTO has given member states a deadline of November 8 to submit their nominations.
This was announced in a message to member states by Petter Olberg, Chairman of the WTO General Council. Olberg said no further nominations were received by the deadline of November 8.
The statement said: “In accordance with the procedure for the appointment of the Secretary-General (WT/L/509), I am obliged to provide members with a consolidated list of nominations received for nomination immediately after the deadline for nominations. Cases relating to the Secretary-General post on November 8, 2024.
“I would like to remind members that as of the end of the nomination period the only candidate for this post is Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, Acting Secretary-General.
“It is from Dr. Okonjo-Iweala that the notification received by her in accordance with procedure paragraph 12 of WT/L/509 was circulated to all members together with my notification in document JOB/GC/406 dated September 16, 2024.”
