The 2027 GRAMMY Awards will feature five new award categories in addition to revised and more accommodating eligibility requirements for the Best New Artist category, according to a significant expansion announced by the Recording Academy.
The modifications are a part of a larger initiative to make the awards more inclusive and representative of the changing global music industry, and they will go into effect at the February 2027 ceremony.
The Academy claims that the changes are intended to better represent traditional music forms, international sounds, and genre fusion all of which have frequently been under-represented in important prize categories. The action also seeks to acknowledge the expanding impact of international music markets and the rising fusion of genres from different cultures and geographical areas.
The addition of Best Asian Pop Music Performance, which is the first time the GRAMMYs will include a category dedicated to Asian pop music, is one of the most noteworthy changes. With an emphasis on records that incorporate Asian languages and exhibit outstanding artistic brilliance within the genre, the category will highlight notable performances from important markets including K-Pop, J-Pop, and C-Pop.
Other recently added categories are Best R&B Collaboration or Duo/Group Performance, which honours contemporary R&B compositions that incorporate elements of hip-hop, pop, and electronic music; Best Latin Song, which will recognise songwriters of recently composed Latin music, mostly in Spanish; Best Traditional Folk Album, which features recordings influenced by heritage folk traditions like ballads, shanties, protest songs, and other long-standing community musical forms; and Best Traditional Pop Vocal Performance, which will honour classic-style vocal interpretations based on traditional pop standards.
Additionally, the Recording Academy acknowledged revisions to the Best New Artist category that allow for more lenient eligibility requirements in response to shifts in the way musicians now originate and develop careers in the digital era.
Industry commentators have characterised the announcement as a major step toward global inclusion, pointing out that the Academy’s understanding of changing musical trends and the growing significance of non-Western music markets is reflected in the new categories.
It is anticipated that the 2027 GRAMMY Awards would further highlight the diversity of international music, as the expanded categories will allow more artists and cultural expressions to be recognised on one of the largest entertainment stages in the world.
