Nigerian comedian and actress Chioma Omeruah, better known by her stage name Chigul, has openly discussed her divorce, her healing journey, and what it means to live life on her terms.
In an episode of the podcast Transparent, the performer talked about life after divorce and shared personal perspectives on relationships, self-awareness, and emotional healing.
Chigul asserted that by feeling young and satisfied at fifty, she violates traditional expectations surrounding age, marriage, and being unmarried.
She also discussed the pressure to adhere to traditional marriage and relationship routines, as well as the stigma that divorced women often experience.
“Two shattered people cannot come together and make a home,” the actress said, highlighting the significance of healing before dating. She asserts that unresolved emotional traumas often affect marriages and relationships.
She explained that successful partnerships include self-improvement and personal development because people have varied upbringings and bring different experiences and perspectives to relationships.
She emphasised that for a marriage to be successful, both partners must be devoted, diligent, and emotionally mature. “When we are broken, we hurt ourselves and others,” she said.
As the episode also looked at age-gap relationships, modern dating, and the expectations that many people have for marriage, Chigul’s candid insights resonated with listeners on the internet.
