According to the Force, it has stepped up intelligence-led operations across the country to thwart any attempt to use foreign conflicts as a means of instigating instability in Nigeria. All state police commissioners, including those in the Federal Capital Territory, have been directed by Acting Inspector-General of Police Olatunji Disu to collaborate closely with religious and community leaders.
Increasing patrols and monitoring around places of worship and other public areas is the main goal of the order, particularly in the North West, North East, and North Central regions. The Force issued a warning that Nigeria will not host foreign conflicts and threatened to take legal action against anyone who tried to bring political or religious issues from outside the country.
Citizens are advised to maintain composure, abide by the law, and notify the police of any suspicious activities. Community leaders are encouraged to support peace. These actions come after US-Israeli airstrikes on Iran on February 28, 2026, which are said to have killed Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, the country’s supreme leader, and other senior leaders.
Iran responded to the attacks with counterattacks in the Gulf, which resulted in explosions in Bahrain, Qatar, the United Arab Emirates, and other nations that house American bases. In addition to causing infrastructure damage and flight disruptions, the strikes also resulted in civilian casualties.
The Nigerian government responded by telling its nationals to be cautious when travelling to Iran and other Gulf countries. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has urged all parties to lessen tensions and appealed for moderation.
